Headshot of Kyle Jorgensen-Lane

About me

My name is Kyle Jorgensen-Lane, and I have spent most of my career working in international affairs and higher education. I have seen and experienced that the opportunity to move to a new country and the opportunity to pursue advanced education can change lives. However, I also know that international migration and higher education can be complex, uncertain, and sometimes frightening.

I have had the opportunity to complete a year of high school in Japan and the opportunity to complete a year of my undergraduate university studies in Ecuador. Following my undergraduate studies, I then taught in Japan for four years. I benefited immensely from these opportunities, but there were certainly many challenges with working through complicated immigration policies and getting by in daily life in new languages and cultures. I was grateful for the professionals who helped me.

Professionally, I have worked for the Government of Canada in international affairs. I have also worked at a Canadian university and a college. My work has given me an inside understanding of how Canadian government and the higher education systems work. Even before I became a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant, I worked extensively with international students who came to Canada for all levels of study. This work has given me a strong appreciation for the particular challenges and opportunities waiting for international students from all over the world.

I my personal life, I have also experienced the Canadian immigration system firsthand. My wife is not originally from Canada, and I sponsored her for permanent residence in Canada several years ago. This was a very complex administrative process as we worked to prepare everything that was needed for our spousal sponsorship application. We then waited a very long time for the application to be approved. I have experienced firsthand the anxiety of waiting a long time and worrying that an error could have very serious repercussions for our lives.

Canada has some great opportunities to offer. It’s my hope that I can help people take advantage of these opportunities and be successful with minimal stress and worry.

About being an RCIC

‍I am a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant. More precisely, I am an RCIC-IRB with a Class L3 license. This license allows me to legally provide expert immigration and citizenship guidance and advice. It also permits me legally to represent clients in immigration and citizenship applications. I can also represent clients in cases before the Immigration and Refugee Board.

To obtain this license from the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants, I completed a Graduate Diploma in Immigration and Citizenship Law from Queen’s University and then passed the Entry to Practice Exam. The final licensing process also involved policy background checks. To maintain my license, I continue to take courses and stay up to date with the frequent changes to Canadian immigration and citizenship law and regulations. ‍

As an RCIC-IRB licensee, I am also bound by the Code of Professional Conduct, and clients can file formal complaints if I do not meet my obligations.

‍My license, contact details, and history can be verified in the Public Register of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants.

About Ursa Major Immigration Services

Ursa Major Immigration Services is a small company providing bespoke guidance and support to international students, early career professionals, and their families working to come to Canada for a little while or to build their lives here. Each person coming to Canada has their own unique dreams and goals.

The name of my company—“Ursa Major”—is Latin, meaning “Great Bear.” It is the name of one of the most recognizable constellations of stars in the night sky over Canada. This constellation of stars can help people find the North Star and understand the direction they are going.

The stars of Ursa Major do not set the direction, but they give clarity and certainty in finding the North Star and the direction for travellers. Similarly, at Ursa Major Immigration Services, clients set the destination goal. I work to find the best way to that goal with clarity and confidence.

Ursa Major Immigration Services is a boutique firm offering customized services that meet the needs of each individual client. Each client’s situation, needs, questions, and concerns are different. Only a small number of clients is accepted at a time so that full attention can be given to each.
